17th Annual Gaslamp Mardi Gras

Beads, boas and mayhem will equal bon temps this March! The 17th Annual Gaslamp Quarter Mardi Gras returns on Fat Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 from 6 PM to Midnight, when more than 40,000 revelers flood the streets of the Gaslamp to become the ultimate bead-miesters!

San Diego’s largest one-day festival will decorate the city’s historic district in vibrant purple, green and gold jewel tones and will feature live entertainment, flamboyant floats, party-starting DJs atop raised platforms, mouthwatering grub from food trucks, incandescent concoctions and beads of every color, shape and size. Fifth Avenue between Broadway and K Street will morph into The Big Easy, with a magnificent parade – cirque-style performers, all-girl pink fairyland complete with go-go dancers, thrilling carnival games and daft punk beats grooving to the projected lightcycles. Attendees dressed in outrageous costumes will party all night as the sounds of the nation’s hottest electronica DJs pump up the crowd in the all new electonica-infused DJ zone, Techno-val.

This decadent day of debauchery is San Diego’s most extravagant party, so don’t miss out! Proceeds will go to the Gaslamp Quarter Association. Tickets to the Gaslamp Quarter Mardi Gras are only $20 dollars in advance and $25 at the door; attendees must be 21 years or older and have a valid ID to enter.

B.B. King at the Balboa Theatre

The thrill isn’t gone just yet. Sure, B.B. King may be getting up there in age, and have trouble moving around on stage, but he’s still the king of the blues. He’s been recording songs since the ’40s, and released over 50 albums (78s, 8-tracks, cassettes, albums, and now CDs). King mixes traditional blues with jazz, swing, and pop — creating his trademark sound (with his trusty sidekick Lucille). Go see a legendary artist, at the historic Balboa Theatre, near downtown San Diego. San Diego Opera Presents Puccini’s “Turandot” in Downtown San Diego. China’s icy Princess Turandot has built a wall of riddles around her heart to keep love away. Desired by every man, she wants none of them. Three impossible riddles are the test to win her love and if you fail, you die. Heads roll until the mysterious Prince Calàf arrives on the scene, determined to marry Turandot and stop the bloodshed. Following in his shadow is his father’s servant Líu – who loves Prince Calàf so deeply she dies for his happiness.

This legendary fable plays out in spectacular surroundings. Audiences will feast their eyes on renowned artist David Hockney’s color-saturated sets as a massive chorus creates exhilarating music by the composer of La bohème and Madama Butterfly. The famous aria “Nessun dorma”, sung and recorded by everyone from Pavarotti to pop idols, will ring out in the golden voice of tenor of Carlo Ventre, as Calàf, to melt the heart of his Ice Princess sung by the Turandot of our time, beautiful soprano Lise Lindstrom.

Maxim Super Bowl Party

2010 Poinsettia Bowl Gaslamp March

The Gaslamp Quarter Association is proud to host the annual Poinsettia Bowl Gaslamp March Sponsored by Westfield.The marching bands from each of the competing schools in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl will be participating in a musical showdown on 5th Avenue just 2 days prior to the big game at Qualcomm.

This thrilling battle of the bands will have you riveted, so be sure to snag a spot on a fabulous Gaslamp patio and watch the commotion – the March begins promptly at 6:00PM, so plan ahead and get to the Gaslamp Quarter early! Parking will be free with validation at Westfield Horton Plaza, and the event is free to view. Also, new for this year will be voting for your favorite team, with all proceeds going towards the Make A Wish Foundation.

Veterans Day in Downtown

The United Veterans Council of San Diego County will hold its 24th annual San Diego Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m. Thursday in downtown San Diego. This year’s parade honors veterans of the Cold War, or those who served between Sept. 2, 1945 and Dec. 29, 1991. This year’s grand marshals are retired Navy Cmdr. Eddie Murphy, representing the Pueblo Incident; retired Air Force Col. Clark Kholos, representing the U-2 Incident; and retired Navy researcher Joe Ciokon, representing the Beirut Incident. The parade will begin at Cedar Street and continue south on Pacific Coast Highway past Navy Pier to G Street. Entries include marching bands, color guards, troops, antique cars, dignitaries and floats.
